NEWS UPDATE ON LEGACY STUD:

The beginning of a breeding season is always a time for reflection. We are now entering the 18th year of our Sport Horse breeding programmes, and its important to take stock and reflect. When we started breeding, Felix and I naturally applied our medical research backgrounds to the “horse passion” as he calls it. We researched the internationally ranked bloodlines for dressage and showjumping, as well as world breeding trends and incorporated these in our Stud. Our goal was to provide a 100% premium imported pedigree and top quality sport horse for the South African market within this Country. The benefit of this for buyers is enormous, bypassing the huge rand/Euro/Pound currency exchange, aside from the exorbitant import travel costs (currently around R200 000) per horse. Towards this end, we purchased the very best imported and premium mares and stallions possible, and at this point in time believe that our efforts have been proven in the ring at both FEI and National level. Legacy’s Real Rob Roy (competing as Principal’s Rob Roy being the owner Stud at this point) won the FEI Young Horse Dressage Championship for our World Division in 2013, and Legacy’s Soraya won the FEI 4 year Old Young Dressage Championship. This is aside from three different youngsters (Legacy’s Bien Venu, Bon Chance and Celeste) winning Western Province Novice Championships in different years, and other championship winners – Reserve Champion Presidents Cup 2012, Champion Youngstock Autumn Cup, and the exceptional Legacy’s L’Oreal winning the Freestate Warmblood Championship 2013 and Champion Youngstock Horse of the Year 2014. Our showjumpers have been steadily showing their merit in the last two years, and we believe that they, too, will steadily prove their worth at top level. For more information on our specific breed programs, follow the different stallions

- Legacy’s Bonheur (Selle Francais x Premium German Warmblood Weltmeyer -Dressage progeny Medium level and showjumping Progeny 1 metre 30 at this point as well as Champion Show Horse offspring).

-Sabio (Imported Lusitano Stallion (Pure bred Lusitano as well as Lusitano x Premium German Imported bloodline progeny – winning at FEI Dressage level, and first crop progeny performing well in jumping sports.

-Legacy’s Luxury (Black, modern sport horse stallion – First crop now 2 years – showing superb, modern sport horse qualities, exceptional movement and temperament).

-Fenix (KWPN bloodlines – progeny shows exceptional movement and jumping ability).

All the stallions have there own facebook pages you can follow.

FEEDBACK FROM RIEN VAN DER SCHAFT’S VISIT – (OLYMPIAN AND INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED DUTCH 529044_152803348176779_721596354_nTRAINER).

For those who are interested – I have written a full report on Rien’s two-day visit viewing horses at the Stud. This covers some background information on some of the different Dressage Bloodline breed programs.

Yesterday was day 2 of Rien van der Schaft’s visit to Legacy Stud, and we were able to look through the rest of the horses, and watch them work. Rien is an ethical and absolutely honest man, so we know that his feedback is trustworthy. He really likes our advanced dressage stallion “Bonheur”, and says that he has a real talent for piaffe and passage, and really good movement. In his opinion its a pity that Bonheur did not have the benefit of correct training in his earlier years – but of course – we all learn over time, so the benefit of my learning applies now to the younger horses. Despite this, Rien is confident that Bonheur will master Grand Prix and Bonheur has a good piaffe and passage, and is now working on mastering his sequence changes correctly. He loved Bonheur’s progeny, particularly the cross with thoroughbred mares – and thought Legacy’s Bernadette was really excellent. This filly is typical of the Bonheur/thoroughbred cross, where (as is a breeding trend in Germany to lighten this heavier Weltmeyer type) the thoroughbred gives an elegance and quality to progeny while maintaining super movement, and a really active, engaged and powerful hind leg action. So, I am thrilled for Tara Moffat who owns Bernadette, and has planned for a high level dressage future. The other impressive colt from this bloodline is Life of Larry (being a half brother to Bonheur out of the Weltmeyer mare Weissgold). “Larry” is a really laid back customer with a truly fabulous, kind temperament. Although at an awkward, yearling stage – he shows exceptional, elastic and elevated gaits and really impressed Rien who said that he is a very good horse.

Looking at the horses working under saddle, Rien really liked the colts Lanzerac, Luxury and Fenix, and said that these were of the quality young horse that he purchases to develop in his own yard – a system which brings in young horses with Grand Prix potential as he only sells trained horses. Luxury and Fenix are different types, Luxury being 100% German and Fenix 100% Dutch imported bloodlines – and he noted that Luxury’s type is typical of the light and modern sport stallions now developed in Germany. So we are very pleased that we are online with international trends.

Rien was also impressed with our homebred thoroughbred stallion “Legacy’s Zoroaster”. Zorro’s pedigree was specially designed on internationally proven thoroughbred showjumping blood, and he is a stallion of beautiful, refined quality and beauty – yet has maintained wonderful movement and a fabulous jump. His pedigree was specially tailored following a visit to Holstein in 2006, when spending some time with
